Three kinds of knowledge

This file was prepared by Max Darby in 2010.

There are 3 kinds of knowledge that art teachers have a responsibility to develop in their students

1.  Know that

2.  Know how

3.  Know to

Know that is factual knowledge.

For example, you may decide that your students need to know that Michelangelo was an important Renaissance artist who was a sculptor, painter and architect; or, that Australian painter Mandy Martin made numerous works that addressed environmental issues.

What things do you think your art students need to know to meet this responsibility? While some things may be common for all, some will vary depending on where and who you teach.

Know how is procedural knowledge.

For example, you may decide that your students need to know how to make a pot using a pottery wheel; or how to use the web to investigate or research art, artists and cultures.

What things do you think your art students need to know how to do to meet this responsibility? While there should be some ‘common’ ways of working to which all art students should be introduced, some will be specific to the kind of art forms and media that students will use.

Know to is knowledge about how to act morally or responsibly.

For example, you may decide that your students need to know to care for the environment; or to treat everyone with care and respect.

What ways of behaving do you think your art students need to develop to meet this responsibility? Many of these should be common worldwide but some that are specific to you, your location and your students should also be evident.

Addressing these three areas of knowledge should be an essential part of the curriculum development of all schools and in the program planning of all art teachers. Sadly, too many educators only think of Knowledge in terms of Know that.
