Old Houses

The following images of old houses and residential places provide some interesting qualities. These include the aesthetics of old buildings, the aesthetics and history of places in decline, variations in subtle colours, tones, linear and textural qualities, and in shape and forms.

Classroom studio tasks could be based on observations of such buildings. Students could collect photographs of their own or use the ones provided in this file to make quick sketches, detailed drawings, prints or paintings. Their photographs could become the basis of a photographic study of ‘old things’ such as buildings, cars (see the file titled Rust), toys, trains, trams, buses and farm equipment.

If you find examples of old building such as these and send them to me I will include them on this file. you might also send me artworks done by your students that provide examples of interpretations of such things.

The images may take a minute to download.

That’s so interesting to hear about…and even greater to hear from you. I imagine an old house would be so fascinating for a kid, and you have some great memories too. Here’s an idea – why don’t you take some photographs of something similar from where you live and send me some photos and I’ll include an album of photos from ‘the other side of the world’ (for me anyway!). Thanks for your comment Max

When I was a kid my parents lived in an old Colonial house built in 1759 in the Catskill Mountains of New York state. The house was incredible for a kid! There were secret hiding spots everywhere from the stone cistern in the basement to the hidden attic door in my closet.
