Modernist Glass Windows

These ornamental windows were photographed in East Melbourne by Max Darby in August 2013

The glass windows are of fused glass and organised in a popular 1970’s Modernist style which emphasizes strong colour and form characteristics combined with  elements of Jewish symbolism. There are 12 windows on the top story of the Synagogue, each one representing one of the 12 Tribes of Israel.

The Hebrew Synagogue in East Melbourne is one of the oldest still in use in Australia. The windows were made and donated by Dr. Morris C. Davis C.M.G., M.D., F.R.A.C.P. in 1975.
