Careers in Art

The list of Careers below is based on one developed by Dr Max Darby and Dr Jenny Aland for their student text book Art Connections.

Please send me any additional career options you come across. Contact details can be found under Contact Max in the Main Menu.

Many students decide they would like a career in the Visual Arts or a related area. Unfortunately many people think that having a career in the Visual Arts means being a professional artist, such as a painter or sculptor. The following list of art careers is not exhaustive but outlines the numerous range of career options available to students. Some careers require tertiary qualifications, other can be taken up by applying to a relevant company or business or by undertaking another form of specialized training.

Careers that usually require Tertiary qualifications have a T symbol beside them while careers that can be taken up through other means have an O symbol beside them. Both symbols have been included where entry can be facilitated by either means.

Almost all Tertiary Art Institutions in Australia conduct interviews with students who wish to take up a course they offer. This is because there are usually more people who apply for the various art courses than available places. Most institutions require much more than specific art skills and techniques in a particular artform. This file should be cross-referenced to the file titled Tertiary Interviews also on this website.

The list is organized into 11 different categories, some of which overlap. Some careers appear in more than one category. New careers are continuously evolving and attention needs to be paid to emerging careers and variations in names.
